چکیده مقاله:

Aside being a key nocturnal Agricultural pest, the two spotted cricket is an important source of protein for humans and livestock. While control is largely by synthetic pesticides, collection is majorly through hand picking and pouring of water into their burrows. In this study, we determined their phototactic response to LED and incandescent bulb light of different colours. An experiment was setup in Federal University, Wukari, using fabricated light traps with 3 Watts light emitting diode (LED) and, 25 Watts incandescent bulbs of different colours (red, yellow, green, blue and white). A control trap was also added. The setup was from 1800hr to 2400hr. G. bimaculatus collected were counted and data subjected to variance analysis and significantly different means were separated using Student Newman Keul’s test at 5% level of probability. The relationship between light intensity of each bulb type and insect density was determined by correlation and linear regression analysis. The results showed that while LED had higher mean intensity despite lower wattage, Blue colour had the highest mean intensity (736.80 Lux) among the LEDs and white (1094.20 Lux) among the incandescent bulbs. Statistical analysis indicated that differences among LED bulb colours were due to random variation; however was significant (p < 0.001) among incandescent bulbs. 93.7% of total G. bimaculatus collected was attracted by LED bulbs with blue LED bulb alone attracting 57.1% of the total insects. Light intensity was positively and significantly correlated with G. bimaculatus count for both LED (r = 0.92, R2 = 84.4%) and incandescent (r = 0.96, R2 = 92.5%). Higher attraction of G. bimaculatus to blue coloured LED bulbs could be as a result of preference to blue colour and/or high light intensity. Hence, blue LED bulbs can be used to manipulate the insect for the benefit of man.

Kinematics of phonotactic steering in the walking cricket Gryllus bimaculatus (de Geer).

Female crickets, Gryllus bimaculatus, are attracted by the male calling song and approach singing males; a behaviour known as phonotaxis. Even tethered females walking on a trackball steer towards a computer-generated male song presented from their left or right side. High-speed video analysis showed how this auditory-evoked steering was integrated with walking. Typically all the front and midd...

New microsatellite loci isolated from the field cricket Gryllus bimaculatus characterized in two cricket species, Gryllus bimaculatus and Gryllus campestris.

We have developed a new set of 27 polymorphic markers for each of two cricket species, Gryllus bimaculatus and Gryllus campestris. Initially, 14 published G. bimaculatus loci were tested in G. campestris; however, only five loci were polymorphic. Therefore, we isolated an additional 50 new microsatellite loci from G. bimaculatus and tested these in both species. In a minimum of 20 individuals, ...

Mating changes the female dietary preference in the two-spotted cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus

Most insect species exhibit characteristic behavioral changes after mating. Typical post-mating behaviors in female insects include noticeable increases in food intake, elevated oviposition rates, lowered receptivity to courting males, and enhanced immune response. Although it has been reported that mated females of several insect species including the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster increas...

Imbalanced Hemolymph Lipid Levels Affect Feeding Motivation in the Two-Spotted Cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus

Insect feeding behavior is regulated by many intrinsic factors, including hemolymph nutrient levels. Adipokinetic hormone (AKH) is a peptide factor that modulates hemolymph nutrient levels and regulates the nutritional state of insects by triggering the transfer of lipids into the hemolymph. We recently demonstrated that RNA interference (RNAi)-mediated knockdown of the AKH receptor (AKHR) redu...

Embryonic development of the cricket Gryllus bimaculatus.

Extensive research into Drosophila melanogaster embryogenesis has improved our understanding of insect developmental mechanisms. However, Drosophila development is thought to be highly divergent from that of the ancestral insect and arthropod in many respects. We therefore need alternative models for arthopod development that are likely to be more representative of basally-branching clades. The...

No Effect of Body Size on the Frequency of Calling and Courtship Song in the Two-Spotted Cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus

The relationship between body size and vocalization parameters has been studied in many animal species. In insect species, however, the effect of body size on song frequency has remained unclear. Here we analyzed the effect of body size on the frequency spectra of mating songs produced by the two-spotted cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus. We recorded the calling songs and courtship songs of male cri...
